Beverly Beat introduces us to Tony Gangi and his project to restore an 1899 "street piano" long owned and played on the streets of Boston by Marino Persechini, who only retired when he turned 94 in 1974.
On his GoFundMe page for the work (as you might expect, restoring a large, heavy wheeled instrument doesn't come cheap), Gangi, who himself often does hurdy-gurdying on Boston Common, writes:
Marino Persechini came to the United States from Italy and, while in New York, purchased the Hurdy Gurdy/Street Piano in 1899. He brought the instrument with him to Massachusetts, where he became a staple on the streets of Boston. He performed with the instrument until 1974, when he turned 94 and the instrument 75. At that time, he sold the piece to Town Antiques in Brookline, Massachusetts, who kept it in their store and invited people to come and hear it play.
The recent closing of Town Antiques found the instrument finding its way into the hands of another antique dealer and then into our hands with the thanks of New Hampshire magician, Andrew Pinard.

Thrown like a star in my vast sleep
I opened my eyes to take a peek
To find that I was by the sea
Gazing with tranquility
'Twas then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Came singing songs of love
Then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Came singing songs of love

Hurdy Gurdys are kinda why Boston Police used to require a "busker's license". Hurdy Gurdys being a way to stand on the street corner and ask for money without violating laws against being a beggar. But some Hurdy Gurdy men had fake HGs (tired of typing it out), there was no "hurdy" in their "gurdy". So buskers had to go to the Licensing Div at BPD HQ with their instrument and show that it worked, they didn't have to play well, but the HG had to be a working model and not an empty box painted up fancy. (a court case in the 90's, I think, did away with busker's licenses).

A street piano would be a nice addition to Keytar Bear, the blind guy with the electric organ, various found object drummers, and the Instagram/TikTok dancers who perform in Downtown Crossing. Personally, I miss the bagpipe guy.
