UPDATE: The bear was tranq'ed, it came down the tree and state wildlife officials loaded it into a pickup so it could be taken somewhere safer for both it and people.

Arlington Police report a police officer on patrol in the Lake Street area responded around 9 p.m. on Thursday to a report of a fire at a rabbi's Lake Street home - and used a handheld extinguisher to douse fire coming from the home's wood shingles. Read more.

Your Arlington reports a May 11 fire, for which police have released video of a possible suspect, is the home of a rabbi who heads the local orthodox Chabad center, which he runs out of his home. The head of the town's Human Rights Commission says there is no current evidence that the fire "was motivated by the identity of the homeowners." Read more.

Knocked over tombstones in West Roxbury cemetery

WHDH reports more than a dozen gravestones were knocked down at St. Joseph Cemetery, between Baker and Lagrange streets in West Roxbury.

Arlington Police report arresting a Billerica man they say robbed a bank in August and then robbed it again this month - and say they are investigating his possible connection to other robberies.

Alewife MBTA garage is closed to new traffic; 5 Investigates (broke the story) and other news crews are on scene, I imagine it's almost as good as a snowstorm newscast.

Town of Arlington alerts note that MBTA will be closing the garage over weekend, at least partly closed on Monday, parking at Thorndike field allowed:

Arlington school and police officials said today they will offer "restorative justice" to the 14 teens IDed as the people who vandalized Arlington High School and spray-painted swastikas and anti-gay slurs on the building on May 2.

Instead of facing criminal prosecution, the teens will be offered a chance at a three-phase program: Read more.

Tree vs. bus in Arlington

Michael Bradford reports an MBTA bus crashed into a tree on Mass. Ave. in Arlington Heights shortly before 6:30 a.m.

Arlington Police report the bus had no passengers when it crashed outside 1194 Mass. Ave., and that the driver was taken to a local hospital for observation.
