New water in Public Garden Lagoon

Damaskin snapped the refreshed Public Garden Lagoon, filled with fresh water after it was drained and its bottom scraped because it had turned into a duck-killing toxic pool, without the microbe-killing oxygen from Covid-19-halted Swan Boat paddling. No ducks so far, he reports.

Scraping the bottom of the Public Garden Lagoon

Damaskin watched workers remove the gunk at the bottom of the drained Public Garden Lagoon today. When done, they'll refill the small pond with clean water that will hopefully end the threat of mass duck die-offs caused by botulism toxin in the water that had been caused, indirectly, by Covid-19 - by forcing the cancellation of the Swan Boats and their paddles, which normally would oxygenate the water, which inhibits the bacteria.

Public Garden drained due to botulism

Update: The city reports draining is now finished and muck removal begun, with the goal of having the Lagoon filled up with fresh water by next weekend.

Damaskin didn't get super close this morning to the Public Garden Lagoon, which the city is draining because of a toxic buildup of botulism-causing bacteria that has been paralyzing and killing ducks. Once all the water runs out, crews will scoop out the muck and then refill the lagoon with fresh water.

Croquet in the Public Garden

A roving UHub photographer captured the scene this afternoon. OK, no, we have no idea when these folks got their croquet set. On the one hand, it's almost charming, and we're hope the holes they left in the grass of the Public Garden did no permanent damage. On the other hand: Jesus, have you guys not seen the news for the last month?
