The Boston Fire Department reports firefighters were able to rescue somebody who somehow wound up in the Mother Brook where River Street crosses, near the intersection with Readville Street and Neponset Valley Parkway, shortly after 8 p.m. The department reports firefighters handed the person over to Boston EMS for transport to a local hospital.

So many questions....How did they end up in the brook? Why did they need all that equipment to fish someone out?

They're not a swiftwater rescue team, so I'm guessing they used what they had - and making the wise decision to use something that didn't require endangering others to rescue this person. Remember that in conditions like these, a "brook" is not something you simply wade across. Even trained swiftwater rescuers will only do a "dope on a rope" rescue as an absolute last resort.

I don't know what your understanding of reality, is but the mere fact they're in a roadway is endangering. Never forget first responders are always at risk.

About that "brook"

If you've ever been by it, you'd know that this section is very wide. It's actually called the Mill Pond, the mill being where there is a dam which leads to the last section of the Brook, which is quite narrow and usually not that deep. There's even an island in the pond section. That said, the final section can be quite swift with the rains we've had over the past week.

I don't know this dam, but a lot of older New England dams really should be called drowning machines - they create a hydraulic that's virtually impossible to escape.

At that point, it's more like a river there or maybe a small lake (except I assume it has a current, since the whole point of the Mother Brook was to power mills in Dedham back in the day, like in the 1600s, so let's go with river).

In my anecdotal experience, about half the residents of the surrounding neighborhood think that this body of water is the Neponset River. It's big for a "brook."

That one of the roads right there is Neponset Valley Parkway.
