Yes! I remember this! There was a septic tank trunk behind Menton, which I thought was odd given that I don't know of much septic in downtown Boston. The stench still sticks with me a year later (figuratively).
A week or so ago outside the Sheraton near the convention center. There were a couple trucks out front with long hoses pumping. For about 3 blocks the stench was overpowering even with your nose plugged. Everyone walking by was gagging. I was surprised by just how powerful the smell was even blocks away.
When I was a kid, in the sixties and seventies, the Fort Point Channel always had, shall we say, a distinctive smell about it. I find it oddly endearing that this is still the case once in a while.

They did the same thing last year and it was horrid. I believe they're flushing the sewers.

behind Menton, several times a week. I assume it's sucking out some kind of kitchen waste.
Same thing

Great time of year to do this. The hotter and more humid, the more smells hang in the air.

I hated fish as a kid because I associated fish with the smell of Fort Point.
