By the time these carolers finished a song as they stood atop the new Franklin Street entrance to the T around 12:50 p.m., there was one person to applaud them.

Perhaps because no sane person wants to hear 45 straight days of christmas music starting before thanksgiving.

Not totally related but reminds me of the time the DC Metro had some very good, and famous musician (whom I can't remember) play some of his award winning music in the station, and more people just walked by without noticing.....the guys name is Joshua Bell and the vid is on youtube.

Music that might sound wonderful in an appropriate venue, can be hideously offensive when played on the phone to callers waiting on hold.
I too would probably flee from a solo violin in a Ⓣ station entrance, no matter who was playing it.

So is this supposed to be the Boston equivalent of those random bleachers/stairs in Times Square?
Yes.

That area of DTX is looking more like City Hall Plaza every day.

It is looking pretty darn great. NOTHING like city hall plaza.
Are their plans to put heaters in the stairs?

It might be a good idea to put heaters in to help the homeless find refuge from the frigid temperatures this winter. Hopefully the Mayor and Governor will allow the poor homeless who can't find alternative shelters permission to stay in the downtown stations during the winter.

What is the deal with those stairs? The front step looks broken, is there a ramp to make it ADA complaint?

I like the attempt to create a public space theatre but that spot feels like the coldest, darkest place in Boston. It's in the shadow of the building, surrounded by concrete made to look like rocks and catches the wind.

I'd prefer if they spent money on fixing the T problems than wasting it on a structure like this. Can we just have a regular entrance to an efficient subway system instead?

Normally I agree but I think the tower developer paid for the whole plaza. Plus, they had to redo the entrance anyway, so it was either going to be these things (and poured concrete slabs really aren't that expensive) or some dumb glass box.
Regular Entrance?

This IS a regular entrance. Instead of wasting the back of the staircase with a slope that would be unusable for anything they decided to put some steps on it so it can be used by the public for impromptu performances and just sitting and relaxing in the summer. The alternate would be the "bunker" that was the old Government Center entrance.
The T has had some pretty stupid entrances as of late (Kenmore, new Government Center, etc) but this one was cheap and designed to have multiple functions. It's a good design.
