Boston.com turned into a worthless cesspool of clickbait a few years ago. I wish someone would write a chrome extension that re-routes any boston.com link directly to Epstein's Weather Wisdom blog--the site's only redeeming quality.

Agree about the Epstein blog. I turned to it many times during last winter's storms. It was written in a level-headed fashion (No "It's going to snow!) and was easy to understand.

Bdc use to be really good, beyond the constant need to have terrible sports writers, ie Mazz and the new guy who's name escapes me right now. The forums were mildly entertaining and usually one or two articles a week would be pretty good. The last decent story I recall reading was the story about fish being mislabeled. The Whitey Bulger coverage was pretty good, but probably lifted from the Globe. The only interesting thing to read on there now are all the racists comments left on stories.

Boston.com will hire journalists who can write in reasonable grammar and avoid writing that sounds like Millenial-speak. Maybe too the site will actually resume posting some news relevant to Boston (like Universalhub does)... doubtful.

They intentionally destroyed BDC to try bring back some revenue over at The Globe site. Now it has no viewers, its time to shut up shop at BDC.
Its too late for The Globe however. Ad supported media is free just about everywhere. They can't put the genie back in the bottle. Too many competitors now. Including this wonderful little gem Uhub.

I received an e-mail today from the Globe urging me to renew and prepay for a one-year or two-year online subscription to bostonglobe.com, running in the hundreds of dollars apiece. Those were the only two "specials" as subscription rates will rise next week.
"In order to continue producing the quality journalism you know and love, we find it necessary to increase our subscription rates. Even with this increase, though, you'll enjoy unlimited access to BostonGlobe.com at a tremendous value — just 99¢ a day. The new pricing will be effective September 21."
The e-mail promises some new features, including a "newly revamped, even ground-breaking Sports section that will be unveiled this fall."
So there's that.

Public Service Announcement: Just use incognito mode to bypass www.bostonglobe.com's payway/5 article per month limit.
I'll keep sharing this tidbit of info as long as they keep littering my neighborhood with Globe Direct garbage, no matter how many times we try to opt-out of its "delivery."
What finally worked for us

Filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. They don't make it easy - they're listed under an oddish name in central Mass somewhere (let me know if you need me to look up the exact name), but after months and months of phone calls, e-mails, Twitter direct messages and, yes, of course, numerous Universal Hub posts, we finally stopped getting the things after filling out a BBB complaint form.

Shirley Leung was the writing on the wall. There might still be some good journalists there, who manage to do some good journalism, but at the end of the day, it's a propaganda instrument for wealthy businessmen who take advantage of the city. Why would I pay them money to undermine the city?

More economical is to subscribe to the print newspaper on Saturday and Sunday ($23/month). You then get free access to the e-paper, which is a completely different animal from bostonglobe.com. It's an exact replica, ads and all, of the newspaper. Great for commuting.

I've still got the link to BDC on the toolbar at work, but I cannot remember the last time I clicked on it. Epstein is the only one I want to read (as others have noted here, and thankfully I have another direct link to his columns.)
The shame is that in the "glory days" they were a great news source. Now, we have Adam, who is great, but he's only one guy.
Sigh.

But just to add one point in the "plus" column for BDC, Adam Vaccaro did some actual, you know, "reporting" on Boston2024 and the Olympic bid for the site. Far more than anyone at the Globe bothered to do, at least for the first few months when the newsroom tripped over themselves racing to praise the plan and talk about what a visionary John Fish was. The fact that the Globe still, to this day, blames the snow this winter for the low polling in every article they write is so telling about how they were told to spin the story.
It was the only time in recent memory that I actually read anything at BDC, partially because 95% of it is piffle and partially because the layout, both on desktop but especially on mobile, is awful. But praise where praise is deserved.
