The Cambridge City Council on Monday considers a proposal to have the city manager try to get the Globe to stop littering the streets with those Globe Direct circulars that many residents never asked for in the first place.
The proposed measure, sponsored by councilors Leland Cheung, Marc McGovern and Dennis Carlone, says the red plastic bags the ads come in is turning Cambridge streets into repositories of red trash. And the bags are not biodegradable, which means the material could last up to 1,000 years, posing a long-term threat to marine life when they are ripped into bits and float out to sea.
Their resolution also says that beyond going against the sort of environmental sustainability Cambridge wants to be known for, Globe Direct has become a serious pain in the ass:
Although many residents have made numerous attempts to opt-out of the circulars and have repeatedly confirmed that they have been unsubscribed with Globe Direct staff, they continue to receive the circulars on a weekly basis ... In some cases, the circular is delivered even when a written notice is posted in front of the dwelling to indicate that the resident does not want to receive it.
Cambridge residents who want to testify on the proposal at the Monday evening meeting at City Hall can call 617-349-4280 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Monday or sign up in person at City Hall between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

I was digging out my front stairwell and I encountered one of these red packets. If somebody went down those steps before they were shoveled, this could have been bad.
Grrrrrr.

I was lucky and convinced Globe Direct to stop delivering with one email message. Here's what I sent to [email protected]. They stopped after one week in November and haven't returned since.
Dear Sir or Ma'am:
I hereby instruct Globe Direct, LLC, Boston Globe Media Partners, LLC, and all affiliated companies and contractors to cease delivery and deposit of all printed "Globe Direct" materials to my residence at [Address], Jamaica Plain, in the City of Boston.
This message constitutes a NO TRESPASS ORDER under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 266, Section 120.
Thank you for acknowledgement of this message.
Sincerely,

About ten years ago, a friend who was active with the arts and performance community put out a specific plea by e-mail for CDs a couple months ahead of First Night. They then hot-glued the contributions, the bulk of which were AOL CDs, to large fish and dragons as reflective scales. The result was pretty neat when marched through the First Night parade.

Back in the day AOL would send 3.5" floppy disks. This was helpful as blank disks weren't cheap and you always needed them. (This is in the days before you could "just email yourself" a file.)
I remember going to whatever AOL page they had to request a "starter pack" be sent to someone. I would enter in a dozen variations on my address and a week later I'd have another supply of floppy disks.
Then they switched to useless CDs and AOL ceased to have any use whatsoever.

Still works, but you have to switch Text Format to "Filtered HTML" for some reason. Something about the definition of the IMG markup that is goofy.
