Wednesday night, BPS notified parents of kids at Snowden International High School, the Josiah Quincy (both lower and upper schools) and the Eliot School (all three schools) that the last day of classes for the year is today, because there was no way to get kids to school and have a Celtics championship parade, NorthEnd.page reports, adding that state officials signed off on the move which "left parents scrambling to find childcare and reschedule end-of-year activities."

Would like some supporting evidence that parents "were left scrambling" when a half-day was canceled with seemingly plenty of notice.

Why don’t you go down to the Prado and talk to some parents?
Unbelievable

When the principal at my child's school was brutally attacked and left unconscious by a student, their school was closed the next day. BPS then made all students make up that day at the end of the year in June even though parents and admin asked for the day to be "forgiven" due to the extenuating circumstances. And now BPS can cancel school for a parade... Unbelievable
Sorry about your kids and the principal

But schools can't "forgive" days missed.
They have to be made up or approved by the higher powers.
As this day off was approved.
Hope your kids and the principal are doing well.

Equity demands equal closures for all kids. I trust our dear leaders to do the right thing.

Foresight is to have workers

Foresight is to have workers prepare the route today.
I get closing the schools but

I get closing the schools but it would be nice if the school system set up alternative optional sites for the kids to go to. Like a community center or some other location where staff can be.
Two of the schools are not along the parade route

Snowden is, being in Copley Square, but the Quincy school is in Chinatown and the Eliot is on a small residential side street in the North End. The parade should not affect either of them.
That's where the schools are

That's where the schools are. Now tell me where the buses have to go to get there.

And tell me why we're having a parade on a FRIDAY. Instead of a weekend?
Oh right so those Celtics players can head to their homes not in Massachusetts or start their vacations also not in Massachusetts.
God for bid we inconvenience 19 people vs 300,000 people by moving it to a weekend.
I do not understand why these things have to happen on weekdays, other than to accommodate players schedules. Screw workers and people that need to be in these areas during the week, let's kiss some overpaid basketball players asses instead.
"Screw workers"

I'm not gonna disagree with you on 19 people vs 30,000 people, but have you considered that participation in the parade may not be 100% optional for players? It's possible that this was mandated by the organization. The players may be "overpaid" in your view, but they're also employees, and when your employer tells you to show up for a function, that's what you do.
So what you are saying here

So what you are saying here is that.. if their employer said "parade Saturday" they would have to do it.
Even more of a reason to have this on a Saturday.
Except...

No, that's not what I'm saying. They're under contract, and as has been pointed out elsewhere, once the season ends the team has limited claim on their time.
Any arguments about "limited

Any arguments about "limited claim on time when the season ends" or the inconvenience to them if they left town and had to come back for a parade lose a lot of weight when you consider...
1. Monday night was game 5. All the players had their calendars out through a possible Game Seven date, which would probably have been today (Friday). It's not like they had any other pressing commitments.
2. They LEFT TOWN mostly as a team and partied for a day and a half in Florida. Seems like none of them was running home to be there for their kids' last day of school this week.
Game 7, if necessary, would have been Sunday 6/23

OT?

I haven't crunched the numbers but its quite possible a midday Friday parade stacks up against a Saturday parade, costwise.
The T will would be in full OT as would alsost all the cops on the Saturday.
There's lots of things
By cybah
Fri, 06/21/2024 - 1:36pm
There's lots of things... events.. that happen on the weekends. Saying "OT" is the problem and why we have it on a weekday is a weak excuse at best.
Even still, if "OT" is the issue. Maybe the Celtics organization could kick in a few bucks since its a fan fare parade for them. Why should the city foot the bill for all of this?
And since Ilb above said they are employees... I see this no different than having a parade for say Moderna when they sequenced the vaccine for covid. I mean that was a pretty exciting thing to happen.. we all weren't gonna die anymore. More of a reason to have a parade.
But b/c we don't do that for big business, we won't. Not sure why the celtics are any different other than "fan support". A business is still a business, no matter what it is.
We gotta get way from playing favorites with certain organizations.
Cancel the parade.
