No, you're not going to get the flu from the vaccine. Yes, this year you might get the flu anyways, though evidence so far indicates you'll be better prepared and have a shorter duration/less severe version. Or you might not get it at all, meaning you are less likely to pass it along to someone who is already dealing with an compromised immune system such as this poor guy. Herd immunity is a real thing.
If you're not willing to do it for yourself, please do it for someone else.
I figured there were probably other underlying health issues since the kid was 23 and sure enough there were. Though we don't know what they are, it's nothing to get overly frightened about.
In which case this just confirms that the flu can be very dangerous/potentially something to be worried about.
I'd say that elderly & infants make up enough of the population that while maybe not "overly frightened" it is wise to be aware/concerned about this as they can be vulnerable as well. This goes especially for those of us who live & work near this person and are also around elderly people or infants.
My heart goes out to his family though, no matter any health issues he may have had, to lose a family member at 23 is a terrible thing.
