Notebook entry remembering the time a heron was there and caught a fish

Last November, somebody noticed a problem with the "elbow tree," a distinctive birch tree near the Jamaica Pond boathouse with a prominent limb pointing downward at the water, rather than up - its trunk had begun to split open. That's a sign of impending death and the person attached a couple of small notebooks and a pencil to the tree both so that people could measure the crack as it spread and to say goodbye to the longtime pondside attraction. Live Boston reports Boston firefighters and EMTs were able to free a man pinned under a tree that gave way and fell outside 33 Kennebec St. in Mattapan around 5:45 p.m. yesterday. He was rushed to a local hospital for care.

Fallen tree on Waltham Street in the South End

Scariest sound of my life. Crash outside 6pm playground full of children. Huge tree just fell over on Waltham in South End for no apparent reason. Cars damaged but no one hurt - thank God.

The mayor's office today declared a war that could last several years against the invasive and voracious emerald ash borer. Residents will see the first major evidence of the battles to come this winter, when Boston arborists chop down several hundred "dead, dying, or significantly damaged" ash trees across the city.
