New England Folklore recounts the story of the two elms that flank the Robert Gould Shaw memorial at Beacon and Park streets - planted by John Hancock himself before the Revolution. Turns out the memorial sits on a vault designed to protect the roots of the trees.

A disgusted citizen files a 311 complaint about the stench at Ryan Playground in Dorchester:

These ginkgo trees drop these every fall and they make the whole playground smell like vomit. If you step on them your shoes stink really badly. Can these be picked up and perhaps the trees be replaced?

One of the miniature trees in the Arboretum's bonsai collection is 167 years old. And the Arboretum itself, of course, has a 1,000-year lease with the city of Boston. Steve Schneider, who oversees the 43 trees in the collection, is mindful of the long timeframes, the Harvard Gazette reports:

We’re a 1,000-year institution, so if someone says to me, 'You'll be long dead before it goes on display,' that’s OK with me.

NorthEndWaterfront.com reports that earlier this month, somebody got down low to the ground with a saw and cut down two saplings at the Copp’s Hill Burying Ground - the latest trees to be killed in a spree that dates to 1995.

Brighton Center has had a similar problem, but the man responsible for that has never been known to leave that neighborhood.

A tree on South Hungtington Avenue that suddenly realized gravity is not just a good idea, it's the law, came crashing down across the street at Back of the Hill, taking trolley power lines with it and forcing the T to end service at Brigham Circle.

The MBTA had to run shuttle buses between Kenmore and Reservoir after a tree fell on wires that run along the tracks this morning. At 8:43 a.m., the T reported the tree had been cleared, the wires had been fixed and regular trolley service had resumed.

The state Department of Agricultural Resources reports a dead spotted lanternfly turned up nestled in a poinsettia in a Boston home, part of a shipment of poinsettias from Pennsylvania, where the bugs have become a threat to a variety of native flora. Read more.
