Sen. Cory Booker plans to hold a press conference in Boston to discuss gun violence "following 17 shootings in five days in Boston that have left local leaders wondering what more can be done," according to a press release today. Booker's not looking for a lot of people to attend, it seems, because the release doesn't say where the thing will be, but does say that reporters can find out by dropping a line to one of his press people, and you know what, if this guy wants to make like it's 1988 and he's George Bush using Boston Harbor as a campaign prop, the UHub Action Mobile News Unit has better things to do.

NorthEndWaterfront.com reports on a proposal by Councilor Matt O'Malley (Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury) to start by giving city workers the day off or maybe switching from Columbus Day to Election Day. O'Malley bemoans turnout in municipal elections of just 25%, which could, of course, also be improved by shifting city elections to the same years as state elections, but, of course, that would simply be unpossible.,

WBZ reports that to better get to know Bostonians, Brenda Cassellius, who moved here from Minnesota to became school superintendent on July 1, plans to live in as many neighborhoods as possible during her time here:

I started off in Roxbury. I don’t know where I’ll go next, but I want to go there, live in that community, go to church with people, synagogue, mosque, and go to the parks, and walk my dog.

The Charlestown Patriot-Bridge reports the City Council is withholding action on people nominated by Mayor Walsh for seats on the Zoning Board of Appeal until they answer a question about what they'd do if the mayor's office approves pot shops closer to each other than the half mile allowed by city ordinance - as it did earlier this year in East Boston. Proposed pot shops need zoning-board approval.

The Dominican Republic’s attorney general and national police director told reporters that the attempted murder was ordered from the United States by Victor Hugo Gomez, an associate of Mexico’s Gulf Cartel. They said Gomez had hired a gang of killers to eliminate his cousin, whom Gomez suspected of turning him in to Dominican drug investigators in 2011.

Mayor Walsh today announced a series of steps aimed at reducing the amount of stuff now sent to an incinerator or landfill, including three extra weeks of yard-waste pickup between April and December, and pilot programs in which residents will be able to have somebody haul away their food scraps for composting and old clothing for reuse.
