WBZ talked to the woman who jumped from the Orange Line bridge over the Mystic River after she got out of the train when its first car began flaming and smoking after a metal panel came lose and created a short circuit with the third rail.

MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said today's Orange Line fire was caused by a roughly one-foot-by-six-foot metal strip that separated from the rest of its car and came into contact with the third rail - "sparking smoke and some fire and limited ignition on the underside" of the car. Read more.

So you can understand why the MBTA, already under the gun for all those safety violations and the ongoing delays in getting new Orange and Red Line trains into service, might want to downplay what happened early Monday morning in the Wellington Orange Line yard, calling it a "battery failure" but grudgingly acknowledging, at least to a Globe reporter, that the "failure" caused "significant damage" to the part of the car where the battery used to be. A lightning strike at Wellington means signal problems on the Orange Line and that, of course, means delays, serious enough to just have trains sit at stations.

New Orange Line train taken out of service

At 8:13 a.m., Sam Hammar was one happy Orange Line camper: She got to Oak Grove and there, waiting for her like a shiny new carriage was one of the new Orange Line trains. She was so excited, she posted a video - with hearts on it.

The Conservation Law Foundation yesterday sued the Encore Boston Casino and four bus companies over casino shuttle buses it charges were allowed to idle for more than the state-allowed five minutes at locations in Everett and Medford, including the Wellington T stop. Read more.

New cars coming to Wellington

Miniature Bumblebee spotted a fresh Orange Line car arriving on a flatbed at the Wellington yard this morning, presumably from the new CRRC assembly plant in Springfield.

The two initial test cars, shipped direct from China, have become a familiar sight on the normally unused third Orange Line track north of Boston. The MBTA says it hopes to begin putting the new cars into passenger service starting at year's end.

Signal problems at Wellington are jamming up Orange Line platforms as trains slow to a crawl. David Christopher reports he's at Wellington, where he watched helplessly as two completely full trains pulled in and then left, with no room for anybody to get on.

New Orange Line cars at Wellington

Roving Uhub photographer Ben Themo spotted a pair of the brand-spanking-new Orange Line cars just chilling on some tracks next to the Orange Line shops at Wellington today. They'll eventually be put through their paces in months and months of testing on the revamped third set of tracks north of Boston before being placed into actual service for long suffering Orange Line riders.

An Orange Line train breathed its last at Wellington and even though workers got it out of sight, it's still causing "moderate" delays, the MBTA reports.
