The Supreme Judicial Court today upheld Charlie Brea's first-degree murder conviction for shooting a man to death during a fight he wasn't initially a part of outside the Breezeway on Blue Hill Avenue in 2010, ruling that even discounting mistakes by the judge and the prosecutor at trial, the evidence was just too overwhelming and the jury would have convicted him anyway. Live Boston reports a man was stabbed in the chest on Washington Street near Castillo Wine and Spirits, into which he crawled for help, around 10 p.m. on Friday. Because of the severity of his injuries, the homicide unit was called in.

Two developers and the owner of an existing Nubian Square business this week filed detailed plans with the BPDA for a complex on what is now a parking lot and vacant land along Washington Street between Palmer and Eustis streets for what they say help revive Nubian Square as a cultural and dining destination and begin turning it into a new life-sciences center, in buildings designed to harken back to the Nubian societies along the Nile. Acting Mayor Kim Janey announced today that, yes, that free Rte. 28 service she prematurely announced in May is really happening this time. Starts Aug. 29 and runs for three months as a pilot on the entire route, from Mattapan Square to Ruggles via Nubian Square. Read more.

State Rep. Liz Miranda reports that over the next two to three weeks, city crews will be converting several two-way streets into one-way streets in the Grove Hall area as part of an overall plan to reduce crashes, especially involving pedestrians, by doing what speed-limit signs don't: Force drivers to slow down. A Cambridge man was charged with his second OUI early this morning after, police say, he veered onto the other side of Columbus Avenue in Roxbury and slammed into a Boston Police cruiser, sending the officer to the hospital. Read more.
