City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo (Roslindale, Hyde Park, Mattapan) writes that it's time for the BPDA to stop delaying action on Roxbury Prep's proposal to turn the old Clay Chevrolet on Belgrade Avenue into a new high school, that Roxbury Prep students deserve a modern high school and that a school literally in front of a commuter-rail stop and with several bus lines running past it will not gridlock local streets.

Last month, Arroyo replaced Tim McCarthy, who had opposed the school.

The Zoning Board of Appeal today denied a developer's proposal to raze a single-family home and garage at the corner of Chellman Street and VFW Parkway and replace it with a duplex after neighbors objected to such a thing. Read more.

The Boston Transportation Department will hold a "Hyde Park Avenue Multimodal Corridor" open house on Feb. 11 as part of its efforts to figure out how to make it easier for people to get between Wolcott Square and Forest Hills. Read more.

The Supreme Judicial Court today ordered a new trial for David Nicanor Diaz Perez of Mattapan, sentenced to life without parole on charges he shot a man in the back outside a baby shower at the Roslindale Amvets post in 2003. Read more.

On March 3, Democratic voters in Boston will get to vote for both a presidential candidate and members of their ward committee. The Bay State Banner reports on efforts by progressives to win those seats - and focuses on Ward 18, which includes large parts of Roslindale and Mattapan, but which has long been dominated by people from Hyde Park.

Sherwood Street fire

A two-alarm fire called in around 12:45 p.m. at 96 Sherwood St. at Ridge Street displaced 12 people, the Boston Fire Department reports, adding there were no injuries.

The fire, which started in the attic, caused an estimated $300,000 in damage, the department says.

The Zoning Board of Appeal today formally denied Roxbury Prep's request to build a new 562-student high school at the former Howard Chevrolet site on Belgrade Avenue at West Roxbury Parkway in Roslindale, a vote that doesn't kill the proposal but which could mean still more delays if it is ultimately approved. Car flipped on Poplar Street in Roslindale

Vicky Elias captured Roslindale's latest flipped car, on Poplar Street just past Beech on the way towards Hyde Park, shortly before 7 p.m. Apparently, the driver came out OK. Read more.

It's in the basement, where the Craft Beer Cellar used to be, below the Turtle Swamp beer hall.

For the fourth year in a row, local Jews gathered in Adams Park in Roslindale to light menorahs to start the eight-day holiday of Chanukah. Several people brought their own menorahs from home for lighting inside a tent at the official start of the evening around 4:12 p.m.. Read more.

The new Treasures on Washington Street.

Treasures, a thrift and antique shop, opened today at 4266 Washington St. in Roslindale Square, in the space where the Boston Smoke Shop used to be.

Meanwhile, workers today were converting the space where the Grossman's bargain outlet used to be at 630 American Legion Highway into space for Urban Renewals, which will be moving there from its current location on Brighton Avenue in Allston ... Read more.
