Knocked down fence on the Arborway

A roving UHub photographer reports that twice in the past couple of weeks, somebody has jumped the curb and taken out the wrought-iron fences on the median on the Arborway between Forest Hills and the Rotary o' Doom and suggest maybe people try driving just a tad slower, even if they are trying to make up for all the time they just spent trying to get from the Jamaicaway to Forest Hills though the semi-newly reconfigured big-ass roundabout.

Boston Magazine provides an overview of the fighting over the 13 acres of the park used for Shattuck Hospital - and now the "temporary" Arborway bus yard next door, pitting mental-health and park/greenspace advocates against each other and gathering in residents who have been putting up with the eyesore bus yard long after the T said it would do something about it.

An outraged citizen files a 311 complaint about the road markings along the Arborway and Centre Street that went in this week as contractors get ready to place bollards for a new bike lane to replace one of the four current car lanes between Parkman Drive and the Arborway rotary. Read more.

Live Boston reports a crash between the drivers of a minibike and a minivan on the Arbroway in front of the Forest Hills T stop around 7 p.m. sent one person to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. State Police shut the road for an investigation.

I removed this from one of the posts regarding the Halloween storm for two reasons; I didn't want to hijack the original thread, and I wanted to flesh out things more.

Route 21 is a good route for those who use the Orange and Red lines and don't want to loop through downtown. On the off-peak and the weekends, Route 21 does run consistently (albeit infrequently; on Saturdays it's every 40 minutes and Sundays it"s every hour). Read more.

New monument to Stony Brook, creek that runs under the Arborway at Forest Hills

One of the finishing touches for the new Arborway roads at Forest Hills is this monument to Stony Brook, a Charles River tributary that now flows almost entirely underground from Hyde Park to the Charles, as Arborway chronicler Clay Harper shows us.

DCR alerts us that from Tuesday until Monday, there'll be "rolling lane closures" along the Riverway, Jamaicaway and Arborway in both directions between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to allow for tree pruning.

Fire alarm box knocked down

A resident of Centre Street in Jamaica Plain (the part that's a continuation of the Arborway) shows us the damage from a driver on the southbound side who plowed through the small field there, smashed into a a fire-alarm box and then took out a hydrant near Louders Lane around 3:30 a.m. - not far from where another driver took out a light pole early one morning in December. Mark MacGilchrist came upon this crash on Arborway Road in Jamaica Plain shortly before 4 p.m., reports BPD and BFD showed up moments later. Rebecca Connors adds:

I saw someone standing next to the car, so I am hoping there were no serious injuries. Still, I don't get how so many cars crash along this divider. So many.

Jonathan Costa, 27, of Brookline, faces arraignment today in connection with a crash at the rotary where the Arborway and Centre Street meet, in which a bicyclist was thrown to the road, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Costa is scheduled to face charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a collision causing injury in West Roxbury Municipal Court, the DA's office says.

New Forest Hills headhouse going in

Clay Harper watched construction start today on the above-ground part of the new entrance to the Forest Hills T stop, or headhouse, which will let people on the northern side of the Arborway get into the station without having to cross the busy road.

The Boston City Archives have posted this digitized film reel from 1932, showing the work to widen Centre Street between VFW Parkway in West Roxbury and the Arborway in Jamaica Plain.

A DPW inspector made the film (look for the brief shot of William T. Morrissey, the engineer who later got a boulevard in Dorchester named after him); his son donated it to the West Roxbury Historical Society, which in turn gave it to the Archives.
