New concrete barriers along bike lane on Massachusetts Avenue

Massachusetts Avenue getting new, tougher bike-lane borders.

Scott couldn't help but notice the new concrete barriers lying amidst the plastic flexposts that motorists love to knock over and park on along a section of the Massachusetts Avenue bike lane south of Boylston Street.

Seized ATV

A seized ATV.

Boston Police report a weeklong crackdown on weaving, stunting dirt bikes and ATVs and their drivers.

Between May 8 and May 15, police say, they arrested 18 people and seized 30 dirt bikes, mopeds and ATVs. Read more.

Cambridge Police report 11 cars were broken into by somebody who gained entry mainly by smashing in the front passenger window, sometime overnight from Friday into Saturday. Read more.

Councilor Kenzie Bok checked into meeting from normally busy intersection at Charles and Beacon.

Workers at the Boston Transportation Department have begun inventorying city-owned traffic cones and barrels as they ready for a coronavirus-related effort to claim parts of some city roads for expanded sidewalks to allow for greater social distancing among pedestrians - including patrons at restaurants that would be forced to reduce their indoor seating once the governor gives them the OK to re-open their dining areas - a BTD official told city councilors today. MassDOT reported this morning that Massachusetts recorded 28 traffic fatalities last month, up from 27 last year, even though there are now 50% fewer cars on the road due to people staying at home because of coronavirus concerns. Read more.

Live Boston reports a woman with three previous OUI convictions was arrested yesterday after she allegedly hit a pedestrian and then dragged him at the top of the Expressway exit to Southampton Street, sending him to the hospital with serious injuries. Read more.

Boston Police report the Covid-19-aware girl got on her gruffest voice and demanded a boy roll down the window of his car on Blue Hill Avenue at Greenlock Street in Dorchester last Wednesday night, while his mother was at a market there, then demanded he and cousin, also in the car, get out, which they did, and then she got in and drove away. Traffic on parts of the turnpike down 73 percent

Ari Ofesevit has been looking at the latest Massachusetts Turnpike traffic data (courtesy those toll gantry thingees) and while it's not surprising that people are simply driving a lot less on the highway in the Boston area in these Covid-19 days, it's still kind of amazing to see - and raises some questions about MassDOT toll revenue.

Boston Police are investigating a crash at Massachusetts and Harrison avenues around 9 a.m. that left a bicyclist dead.

Live Boston reports the victim was declared dead at the scene.

Flaming car and electric lines in Dorchester

The Boston Fire Department reports a driver managed to escape without injury after he drove into a utility pole at New England and Southern avenues in Dorchester, bringing down a transformer and electric wires onto his car and a nearby fence, all of which then burst into flames around 9:40 p.m. on Tuesday. The Supreme Judicial Court ruled today that prosecutors can use license-plate data from cameras mounted on both Cape bridges to make their case against an alleged heroin dealer who was nabbed in part because the data showed he was making frequent trips on and off the Cape - and alerted Barnstable police to the specific trip he made that led to his arrest. Live Boston reports that shortly before midnight on Saturday, two motorcycle drivers collided at C Street and West Broadway in South Boston. The drivers, and a passenger on one of the bikes, ran away before firefighters or police arrived.

Roving UHub photographer Angel Nunez captured the action on Rte. 128 northbound near the Rte. 109 exit shortly after 2:30 p.m., reports the driver seemed to have gotten out OK.

The Brookline Transportation Division reports both the Select Board and the Transportation Board have approved an "open streets" plan to reallocate some of the asphalt along Harvard Street, Longwood and Brookline avenues and part of Beacon Street for use by people not in cars so that they can get around while maintaining social distance, at least during the current Covid-19 emergency. Smashed up car in Brighton

Live Boston reports that a driver whose car went airborne before coming to a crashing halt in front of Party City on Soldiers Field Road around 6:45 a.m., suffered only minor injuries, as did the driver of another car he hit. Read more.
