A concerned citizen files a 311 report about the carriageway heading north on West Roxbury Parkway:

There are NO speed limit signs anywhere along the ENTIRE lower West Roxbury Parkway. Cars use this as a speedway and to avoid the traffic on West Roxbury prkwy in the morning. It is extremely dangerous to walk along and the speeding cars getting worse.

Cambridge Day reports a Middlesex Superior Court jury today found the driver of a dump truck who hit and killed Jie Zhao, 27, at Magazine and Putnam streets last year, after a trial in which the driver's driver suggested the MIT graduate was to blame for her death because she may have been listening to music and so unable to hear the truck's back-up beeping.

The Boston Transportation Department has halted design work on a proposal to reduce Centre Street from the Holy Name Rotary to Spring Street in West Roxbury from four lanes to two and add pedestrian islands, bike lanes and new turn lanes so that it can study an alternative plan from a newly formed neighborhood group to keep four lanes but add pedestrian crossing lights at some intersections, re-stripe cross walks and step up police enforcement of traffic laws. The state House of Representatives voted 153-1 today in favor of a bill that would ban the use of handheld electronic devices while driving. State Rep. Chynah Tyler of Roxbury (D-7th Suffolk), who cast the lone opposing vote, says she doesn't oppose the basic idea, but that the bill did not contain any provisions to collect data to ensure minority drivers won't be singled out for enforcement.
