Hyde Park man charged with armed home invasion on own street

Boston Police report arresting Thiago Oliveira, 28, for an incident around 3:20 p.m. yesterday in which he allegedly burst into a relative's home and tried several times to shoot him, only his gun wouldn't work.

Officers briefly spotted Oliveira not long after the incident, when somebody called 911 to report a suspicious man standing outside near a car, but he was speeding away as the officers arrived on scene, police say.

While on scene, officers received a second call relative to a found firearm, believed to have been discarded by the suspect in the area of 1114 River Street, less than a mile away from the original call. The firearm was secured and determined to be a loaded 40 caliber Smith & Wesson SD40VE handgun which matched the description provided by the victim.

Officers ascertained that the suspect was presently on probation and, consequently, wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet on his person. Armed with this knowledge, officers were able to track the suspect as he returned to 42 Neponset Street a few hours later. Numerous officers responded back to the scene along with members of the BPD SWAT Team at which time the suspect surrendered himself without incident.

Oliveira was charged with armed home invasion, assault with intent to murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and various violations of motor-vehicle laws.

Innocent, etc.
