Pia Owens reports on an attempt to find the best donuts "from every local shop we could find within a 10-mile radius of our home in Watertown, Massachusetts, plus Dunkin’ Donuts as a control group."

There are no good donuts

Betty Ann Bakery in East Boston is gone. The era of good donuts is over. My waistline is happy but my tastebuds are sad.

The most disgusting donuts ever. Tastes like you're eating a hunk of lard....

This is a sad way to find out that Ohlin's closed.

Went out with a bang at least.
I hope they return soon - haven't heard if they're still intending to though :(
With a bang and no injuries

From what I heard the oven exploded but the baker luckily was around the corner and a brick wall protected him from injury. Had the explosion happened a few seconds earlier or later it would have been possibly fatal for him.

Big fan of Demets. I walk by Mike's Donuts on the way to the dentist, and they look tempting from outside, but I'm always on my way to the dentist.

Donuts with a Difference and Kane's

Not sure if they made the 10 mile radius, but the service there has improved a great deal and they seem to have donuts earlier in the day. Their Boston Cream is heavenly!
Then we have Kane's in Saugus (and downtown, but you pay more for them). I sometimes plan to get to them around mile 30 of a bike ride. The creme brulee is unique and amazing.
I forget the name of the one in Green Harbor in Marshfield - very much worth a visit when headed down the coast.
They sure did

Kane's came in first (Boston location, though) and Donuts with a Difference was second.

SwirlyGrrl, looks like you didn't read the article, but clearly you know what you're talking about. (Spoiler alert: you identified the top 2.) I have to say, while I love Kane's, I'm not a fan of their creme brulee donut. I thought the custard was too eggy and the whole thing felt like sugar overload. I think Dockside Donuts is the one you're talking about in Marshfield -- I'll remember that next time we're out there!

All for Donuts with a Difference as well. Someone brought them into work and they were amazing. (DD used to almost be this good when they made donuts in each individual store).
Also miss the spot in Cambridge on main where Bertucci's is now. Anyone remember the name? Little coffee shop attached. 'bakers dozen' of donuts every Friday.
