Remember when talk-show hosts mostly weren't all angry, spitting screamers? The Orlando Sentinel reports the former WRKO host - and one-time Libertarian presidential candidate - died today in San Francisco. He was 72.

I remember listening to Gene Burns when he was on WRKO before Jerry Williams on weekday afternoons. I also remember his cookie exchange and when my brother was on it.

He started out his talk radio career in the '60s at WCBM (AM 680) in Baltimore. As a seven-year-old I listened to him with an earphone plugged into my own red Panasonic transistor radio smuggled under the sheets after lights-out.
He was classy. He was the real deal.
Nice Wikipedia entry for him

He took part in a couple of Libertarian Party state conventions while I was involved with those events. Very nice man, a pure joy from a professional standpoint, a class act all the way.
Very sad news :-(
