Wicked Local Concord reports that a) there are freshwater jellyfish and b) they've been found by the thousands in Walden Pond.
Have I mentioned that I'm terrified of jellyfish? Have been ever since I was stung by a Portugese Man-o-War as a kid (and yes, I know that that is being unfair to the jellyfish since the MoW isn't really one...they sting, okay?)
Always keep my eye out for them when in the ocean. Always leave the ocean if I see one. But ponds used to be safe. No jellyfish here!
If you read the article, you would have learned that they pose no threat - their stinging cells are dinky tiny and can't penetrate human skin. You also would be able to put your phobia in perspective by realizing that the entire jellyfish is small - a fraction of the size of the ocean jellies you mention.
I thought the article was very cool since I didn't even know there were freshwater jellyfish! It's always great to learn new things, don't you think?
As you say...it is a phobia. Completely irrational, and I'm fully aware of that. I did read the article, and got half-way through thinking "well, they're tiny and don't really sting humans" when I came down with a full-blown case of the heebe-jeebies. :)
But yes, I agree. Pretty cool all the same!
...rule your life! In just this one case, you stopped reading a neat article because of your anxiety.
There are plenty of effective treatments available, including non-medication based therapies.
I did read the whole article. Thus the "yes, I agree (freshwater) jellys are cool" comment.
But thank you for your concern. :)
