The Boston Licensing Board today approved a proposal by Brian Burke to open the Sandwich Schlepper at 253-261 North Harvard St., a couple blocks away from Barry's Corner, in an 1890s building that Burke is restoring. Read more.

WBUR reports MassDOT has picked a plan to deal with the decaying elevated Massachusetts Turnpike section in Allston by straightening it out and dropping it to ground level.

To make room for that, the state will then build a new elevated roadway above one side of the turnpike to carry Soldiers Field road, which now runs along the Charles, as part of the $1.1-billion plan.

WBZ reports a woman suffered life-threatening injuries when the car she was in jumped the curb, hit a tree and wound up sideways inside Marty's Fine Wines and Liquors on North Beacon Street around 2:20 a.m. One person was taken from the scene in handcuffs. NBC Boston reports owner Marty Siegal does not have insurance, but will try to get the store re-opened.

Vivant Vintage mural before defacement

Mural before it was defaced.

Just three months ago, artist Hiero Vega finished this mural on the side of his brother's Vivant Vintage clothing store on Lincoln Street in Allston. Sometime this week, somebody who has yet to master the art of writing, let alone a sense of shame, defaced it. People who admire the work are raising funds to pay for Vega's travel up from Florida and the cost of the new paint so he can repair the damage.

Common Ground facade collapse in Allston

Shortly before 3 p.m. about 40 feet of the facade at the Common Ground bar on Harvard Avenue collapsed to the ground. Firefighters who rushed to the scene reported one person critically injured, another person who was hurt by did not need hospitalization and six people trapped inside. Firefighters entered the rear of the building and evacuated them.

Car hit by tree in lower Allston

Brad Squirrels reports a totally healthy tree was snapped in two by the wind - with the falling part landing on a neighbor's car behind his house on Franklin Street in lower Allston.

The Board of Appeals yesterday approved a developer's plans to replace a condemned office building on Penniman Road with a seven-story, 44-unit condo building - next to a 36-unit building and surrounded by low-lying industrial buildings slated for demolition to make way for a three-building complex with more than 260 units.
