The folks at the Boston City Archives wonder if you can place this scene. See it larger.
Corner of Adams Street and Victory Road
I think it’s Victory @ Neponset looking south.
Neponsett and Victory road. Is a little past split of Adams and Neponsett.
Neponset and Victory looking south. That building on the corner, albeit altered is still there.
The trees on the left tell me that that was a big Victorian before the phone company put the garage, which is now the wood supply place there.
Neponsit and Victory Rd
Neponset and Victory. Just walked by!
don't think I wanna try Fish Fruit.
...if the Archives hadn't left the street sign visible, and legible, at right.
The scene today
I remember walking into Sevens a few decades ago and seeing Pickwick on tap. That was a shock. Normally, you'd see it in skanky bars that had a line outside when it opened at 7 AM. Of course, I ordered one.
Before malt liquor was a thing, there was Pickwick Ale, brewed right in JP by Haffenreffer. The name later belonged to Narragansett, and now I believe someone else is making an ale by that name, but the original high abv “Haffenwrecker” is ancient history.
Pickwick Ale and Haffenreffer Malt Liquor were two distinctly different animals.
Narragansett made a number beers, let's see what I can remember from my beer delivery days:
Narragansett lager, ale, porter
Krueger beer, ale, pilsner
Haffenreffer beer, ale, malt liquor a.k.a. Green Death
Narragansett was bought by Falstaff sometime in the 70's and eventually closed the Cranston RI brewery.
A few years ago, someone bought the Narragansett name and marketed the beer again. I manage to down a few Narrys on visits to Block I.
I miss Haffenreffer. Private Stock aka "The Green Dragon" was my go to adult beverage when I needed a buzz and was low on funds.
I do be missing my Pickwick Ale.
I had whatever version of Pickwick many years ago at Doyle’s. Talk about WRETCHED!
Thanks for playing, folks! This is indeed Victory Rd at Neponset Ave. We're dating it at late 1940s. You can see a high res version here: https://cityofboston.access.preservica.com/uncategorized/IO_ac812a67-0b6...
