Citizen complaint of the day: Pursued by a snarling hellbeast across the desolate plains of Lower Allston at midnight

A concerned citizen who likes walking his or her dog in Harvard's holdings off Western Avenue filed a 311 report about a coyote that chased them shortly after midnight:

Coyote, possibly/likely with rabies? Just walked my dog through here and was pursued by a snarling coyote. I have a big husky like dog, and that didn't scare off the coyote. It chased me down from the Harvard parking lot to hopedale. Got 8-9 feet away at one point. I've called Harvard before, but something is definitely wrong with this coyote to chase a human and dog down.

I guess he might have followed the river there, but that's an odd place for a coyote to have made it to as well.

Which supports the hypothesis that it was rabid.

Rabid animals don't stalk.

Perhaps you should read about animal behavior somewhere rather than assume all animals are rabid. Because that's rare and you sound like a fool.

and we've seen tracks near the stadium. (There was actually a recent photo on UHub of one in the nearby soccer field.) So I don't think this is particularly far off the beaten track for a coyote. They adapt well to urban environments.

But this doesn't sound like normal behavior for one, even if the location isn't unusual.

Maybe it wandered off from the University of South Dakota and ended up at Harvard.

Who's going to check its fur for a toll transponder?

If it's rabid you and your dog are lucky it didn't attack. We"ve seen what rabid foxes can do. Can you imagine what a rabid coyote could do?

Growling and stalking doesn't sound like rabies....
