John Hanzl spotted two of those new Orange Line cars being delivered this morning at the T's Red Line yard in South Boston, rather than at, oh, the Orange Line yard in Medford.

is that they will be undergoing some testing and doing some testing of "Track 61" (parallels Haul Road), which will become the Red Line testing track when those cars start to come online in 2063.
So they're using test cars to test the test track on which Red Line test trains will be tested?

Before you guys attack the T these trains were delivered to the red line for training purposes. The red line and orange line trains are exactly the same (besides the red have 2 more doors) so they are using these to train the red line personnel.
Red and Orange Line trains operate on different gauge track, so not the same at all and those Orange Line cars cannot be dropped onto the tracks in the Red Line yard as a result.
Orange and Blue Line trains operate on the same gauge track., that's why you'll sometimes see a Blue Line train running past Wellington on test mission.
All of the MBTA's track is standard gauge (4 ft 8 1⁄2 in).
would be better suited for the "out of control" Orange Line story right above this one!
But I think I'll save it up for when I can ride it!

If it is not already happening, the Springfield assembly facility should be running 3 shifts to accelerate the production of the new cars.
wouldn't it be easier (and cheaper) to move the personnel than the trains?
if the training track is here, it's probably cheaper to move the trains than build a new track somewhere else.
So the orange line has a third track that was originally built when the Haymarket North Line opened in in the 1970s. I assume it was for express service. The track only goes to edgeworth crossover and ends.
The third track was upgraded a few years ago with anticipation of new trains and using that track to burn the trains in.
However if they are training staff, Track 61 makes a bit better sense since it doesn't go anywhere near real service, while the 3rd track on the O line paralles existing service.
It may be a safety thing, and to train drivers faster.
These are two of the first four "pilot" cars that came in 2017. These eventually have to go back to the builder in Springfield to be updated to the final "spec" like the production cars now in testing that will actually enter service on the Orange Line. It looks like they decided they would let the Red Line people train on them for a while (since they don't have their own to play with yet) before they make the trip to Springfield. It actually is easier to have the cars there for people to train on, since they can do it in between other work with less time off than if they had to go back and forth to Wellington.
These were moved from Wellington, they aren't new deliveries.

Well, I tweeted Pesaturo and he said they were in Cabot to be used for training more employees on how to operate the trains. Best guess is that they can use the OL Wellington tracks, and the RL Track 61 to train more people faster?
I'm sure that there's a good reason for it, but there is a considerable amount of irony to these new rail cars being moved around by flatbed trucks.
There certainly must be a name for this sort of transit tease torture porn.
It's the new Passenger Truck service. Has to be.
