Four-alarm fire erupts in Cambridge building

Fire on Hunting Street in Cambridge

The Cambridge Fire Department reports a fire that broke out this morning at 6 Hunting St., off Cambridge Street, spread to a neighboring building.

The department reports no injuries from the fire, to which firefighters responded around 5:40 a.m.

Residents can go to the Frisoli Youth Center for help from city officials.

Cambridge Police are urging motorists to stay clear of the area.

Garrett Quinn, who lives nearby (and who reports he woke up to the sound of news copters overhead and then discovered the power was out) shows why:

Adam - I am surprised that you made no movie reference in the lede or otherwise in the story on the Cambridge fire

resulting in fire spreading to adjacent buildings, as here. Say no to such zoning laws and changes!

You do realize that literally putting enough space between all buildings to act as a firebreak would mean the end of all cities everywhere, and that both firefighting and building construction have advanced a bit since the 19th century, right?

Remember all those new wood-frame (gotta be green!) 10 story apartment buildings that kept catching on fire last year...while they were still being built.

Developers use wood because it's cheaper, and because the building code allows it for residential mid-rises. Calling it "green" is a stretch. Building out of wood is a market-driven phenomenon.

So if it's for a green rationale, you don't like it...but since it's capitalism, you like it now, right? I don't want you running afoul of your own derivative political drivel.

Find out what can happen when there is a lot of space between buildings and it doesn't matter.

I've seen a raging forest fire come boiling into the valley where I lived before and it is a terrifying and awesome force of nature.

You don't need buildings to have fires spreading quickly.

I live in this neighborhood, and am very concerned. I am going to demand that the City of Cambridge determine which buildings are too close together, and add more space between them.

If we're showing off crazy plans, see my idea for all asbestos buildings.

Several things beside distance keep an adjacent building from igniting:

1. Good fire detection system with connection to local Fire Department
2. Sprinkler system connected to same system
3. Rated fire wall between structures

Rather doubt that with liberal grandfathering laws that either of the Cambridge buildings had any or all of the above

They demolished the building last night. Sunset Cafe Restaurant posted a video on their facebook page. Might be worth an update on what the fate of the building and restaurant will be. Kimchi Kitchen is also still closed although their building is still standing.
