Fire damages block of stores on Blue Hill Avenue at Columbia Road

Fire at 600 Blue Hill Avenue

The Boston Fire Department reports a three-alarm fire this morning at 600 Blue Hill Ave., at Columbia Road, did an estimated $500,000 in damage to stores, including the Fernandez Brothers Grocery.

The three-story building has two floors of apartments above stores, but nobody was living in the apartments, the department says, adding there were no injuries.

The cause of the fire, reported around 5:30 a.m., is under investigation.

That's probably at least 8 vacant apartments. Surely each one could rent for at least $1000 a month (probably more.) What landlord is willing to just piss away $8000+ every month?

I imagine that it's likely that the empty apartments above the retail first floor could have code violations, making them impossible to rent. The owner(s) might find that bringing the apartments up to code for tenants not worth it for them for a variety of reasons. Just one possibility.

Fires are not uncommon during renovations.
