Boston Public Schools to immigrant families: Your kids are safe with us

A BPS parent forwards a message BPS Superintendent Tommy Chang - himself an immigrant - is sending to parents:

Dear Boston Public Schools Community,

We want all of our families and staff to know that we will continue to stand up for all of our students and families, regardless of their immigration status. We will welcome and teach every single student who enters our classroom. Diversity and inclusion are at the core of our values as a school system and as a city. We are a "Culture of We," and we are one BPS family.

We will work with famlies to help students remain focused on learning, both academically and emotionally, especially during these uncertain times. As Mayor Martin J. Walsh said yesterday, we will not retreat one inch from welcoming diverse, global communities into Boston because they make us stronger.

"Mr Carroll... I feel sort of Dengue-ey. Can I go to the nurses office?"

"Oh that is not the third-world disease you are feeling, little CapeCoddah... that is DIVERSITY you feel coursing through your veins.... or it is ebola. Who can tell?"

The trick to suffering through some stupid disease that we wiped out a hundred years ago by using flush toilets and washing our hands, is to simply call it a "vector-borne disease" when anyone asks why you are bleeding from your eyes or something. It sounds so cool and is not usually far off the mark.

Please consult verified references on how things like dengue are transmitted, etc. before you go off on this sort of stupid tangent. There is plenty of info out there in lay terms.

Unless your goal is entirely to prove what an idiot you are.

Note that climate change is going to do a hell of a lot more for this than any immigration. That's because ... WE DON'T YET HAVE ENOUGH OF THE RIGHT MOSQUITOES.

So, unless you've been buying certain sorts of services from newly arrived people with demonstrable febrile illness ... AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN.

This is a public service in ACTUAL FACTS from your friendly local epidemiologist who is getting paid good money to study this stuff and keep it out of MA.

Stick to the BenGay ... www.mass.gov/eohhs/docs/dph/disease-reporting/guide/dengue.pdf

Preventing people from entering this country based solely on faith runs counter to everything we stand for as Americans. Let's be clear: this is not an effective way to combat terrorism and increase homeland security. It is a reckless policy that is rooted in fear, not substance, and further divides us as a nation and a world. It is simply morally wrong. As Americans, we must move forward together as a country proud of our diverse heritage, and find real solutions to the challenges we face
