We were coming into Park Street. The operator was preparing to stop for the permanent stop signal at the end of the platform, when there was a sudden jolt and the train shuddered to a stop (Just to clarify, I was at the front of the first car).

While waiting for people to arrive to assist in the evacuation, the operator mentioned to a bunch of us that we'd had a derailment. In the meantime, I could hear the dispatcher over the radio advising all eastbound service to loop at Park Street - I imagine the backup is well past Copley at this point.

Ironically, coming into Government Center, I noticed the equipment and debris still blocking the Brattle Loop and thought to myself "Hope they don't have a problem where they would need to use that loop."

BTW, in my 36+ years of riding the T, this is the third derailment and the second tunnel evacuation I've personally been involved in.

Please stop riding the train.

For the rest of ours sake. Thanks.

But I did the math anyway.

Assuming 24,000 one-way trips over those 36 years (it's probably slightly higher than that), that means I was personally involved in a derailment 0.013 percent of the time. And I was personally involved in a tunnel evacuation 0.008 percent of the time.

My rate is 0%.

These things only seem to happen on days when I'm not riding.

The headline doesn't rhyme

If there's a chance of injuries or something really major, I'll go with a straight headline. Hindsight is, of course, 20-20.

A westbound Green Line trolley car derailed as it entered Park Street Station shortly before 9:00 a.m. today. There were no injuries.

The first of the 2-car train had reached the platform while the second car had not. Customers aboard the second car were escorted to the platform a short distance away.

There were more than 200 customers aboard the train.

Crews are working to re-rail the car and resume regularly scheduled service. Green Line trains are currently limited to one westbound track at Park.

Green Line service is suspended between Haymarket and Park Street Stations. Customers are urged to use the Orange Line, which runs parallel to the Green Line from North Station to Park St.

Customers desiring service to Government Center must utilize Blue Line service using the Orange Line and transferring via State Street.

Not quite. I was on the first car, and neither car had reached the platform. Passengers from both cars had to be evacuated through the tunnel.

T alerts advise to expect "severe residual delays."
